Five Factors Affect Adsorption Dryer’s Proper Operation

Adsorption dryer can achieve the drying effect through the "pressure change" (pressure swing adsorption principle). Obviously, working pressure is a very important part for normal operation of adsorption dryer. In addition to working pressure, other factors also have important impact like intake air temperature, condensate water, oil mist, regeneration gas capacity and so on, which also affects normal operation of the adsorption dryer.

Working Pressure

1. Saturated water content is inversely proportional to the pressure in compressed air, that is, the lower the working pressure, the greater the humidity load of the dryer, so the demand is also become larger for regenerative gas capacity;

2. From the dryer structure, we know that the regeneration air is determined by opening degree of the orifice plate or ball valve and the pressure difference on both sides. In the case of a certain circulation area, flowing orifice plate or regenerated gas amount of ball valve is proportional to the pressure, so the decrease of working pressure results in the decrease of regeneration gas amount, which reduces regeneration efficiency and adsorption efficiency of the adsorption dryer.

3. The volume of compressed air is inversely proportional to the pressure, the lower working pressure increases the flow rate of the compressed air empty tower, and shortens contact time between the adsorbent and compressed air, resulting in a decrease of dynamic adsorption capacity.

4. It will increase pressure loss in the adsorbed bed as the pressure drops, the velocity of tower increases.

Intake air temperature

The compressed air is saturated air with a certain temperature after entering adsorption dryer. Under the same pressure conditions, the temperature increase 5 ℃, and then saturated water content increased by about 30%, that is, the humidity of adsorption dryer increased by about 30%.

In addition, adsorption capacity of adsorbent will decrease with increasing temperature, so that the drying efficiency of adsorption dryer will decreases as the increasing of inlet temperature of the compressed air.

Condensate water

Rear cooler of air compressor discharged a supersaturated compressed air, containing a certain amount of condensate water. A small amount of condensate water has little effect on the adsorption dryer, and if adsorption dryer does not install gas-water separator and filter, or if a large amount of condensate water enters the adsorption tower due to abnormal factors, it will cause deterioration of adsorption, the temperature sharply rises, causing the adsorbent break down into powder when more worse. (Specifically: spray dust from the muffler, the rear dust- filter is blocked).

When the heat is sufficient, the water evaporates into a gas and expands rapidly to expand the adsorbent.

Oil mist

It will lead to poisoning of adsorption materials, and premature failure, affecting the dryer effect of removing water, if the oil is too much.

Regeneration gas amount

In running process, adsorption dryer can't randomly adjust regeneration gas amount. In addition, for heat adsorption dryer, the instantaneous flow of regenerated gas can’t be too small, otherwise it will reduce the heat transfer efficiency as a heat carrier, damaging the structure and performance of the adsorbent due to local overheating and most part heat-less.

At the same time, too small flow will cause low flow rate, and easily cause short circuit of adsorption layer due to air flow passing, resulting in "tunnel effect", which can't evenly transfer heat and effectively analyze.
