Application of Pressure Dew Point in Compressed Air System

Air compressor make air’s volume reduced and pressure increased via doing mechanical movement, which is called compressed air. Compressed air is an important power source, it is widely used in many industrial fields, such as machinery, metallurgy, electronics, electric power, medicine, packaging, chemical industry, food, mining, textile and transportation etc. But the compressed air contains water, oil mist, impurities and solid particles, so it must be treatment trough filtered purification, after that resulting in dry, clean, oil-free compressed air. Filters can eliminate oil, dust , while air dryer can handle water.



Dew point temperature (Td)

It Refers to temperature of the water vapor saturated in the air at the beginning of the condensation, that is condensation temperature. At 100% relative humidity, the ambient temperature is equal to the dew point temperature. The smaller the dew point temperature much than , the smaller the dew point, which means the air much more dry. The dew point is not affected by temperature, but is affected by pressure.



Moisture in compressed air

As compressor compresses the air, dew point of the gas rises. At some point, the gas moisture reach saturates and begins to moisture condensation. Therefore, the treatment of water must be considered. For example, 30 kW compressor produces about 20 liters liquid for 8 hours when compressing air at 20 ℃ and 60% RH.

  
Moisture in Compressed air will cause adversely affect for production process, not only affect the quality of the final product,but also cause harm to the compressed air system. Moisture can cause a number of hazards, such as hygroscopic product adhesion (such as sugar industry); coating process foaming (such as painting process "fish eyes").

  
Most compressed air systems are made of steel or non-galvanized steel,it will be corroded when they touch with compressed air containing high amounts of moisture. Dust and flaking rust in the ducts can be blown into the sensitive equipment along the air path, which causes system break down. excessive moisture can cause icing in winter, If part of the system is installed outdoors.

Reliable dew point measurement can accurately control the dryer whether it is working within the technical specifications. For adsorption dryer, the regeneration interval can be controlled by measuring the dew point, and can save a lot of energy for user. Unlike the traditional timer method, the system does not initiate the regeneration function as long as the drying degree of compressed air within user’s requirement. Dew point control can save up to 80% energy costs.
